A news release from Indiana State Police Lowell District said the dogs are all Labradors and the owner is a local breeder.Д«oone Grove Fire Chief Mike Meinert said this is the 3rd time in 10 years that pet masks were used, masks were donated by a caring citizen. As of last night, officials say all of the dogs survived as a result of everyoneвЂ™s brave actions. State Police say one of the dogs was taken to an animal hospital in Valparaiso by Trooper Hansen and that as he drove his police car, Kouts Fireman Mike Luzack administered C.P.R. None of the first responders were injured. The SheriffвЂ™s Office reports the homeowners were not home during the incident. Five of the dogs were taken to various animal hospitals for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation. The dogs were not breathing according to the SheriffвЂ™s Office, and the officers, firemen and paramedics immediately began rendering first-aid and CPR.

Police say the dogs appeared to be unresponsive as a result of smoke inhalation and two of the dogs were pregnant. Authorities say quick thinking by these 1st responders resulted in their entering the smoke filled structure and removing a total of seven dogs who were all unconscious. Also on scene prior to fire engines arriving were two Porter County SheriffвЂ™s Deputies, two Hebron Police Officers and the Hebron Fire Chief. When he arrived on scene, he observed thick black smoke coming from the garage windows. Trooper Justin Hansen, who is also a volunteer fireman with the Boone Grove Fire Department, was on patrol in Porter County when he received a page of an active residential fire in Porter Township. The Porter County SheriffвЂ™s Office reports deputies were called to the scene in the 500 South block of County Road 500 West at 4:09pm, and were assisted by members of the Boone Grove Fire Department, Hebron Police Department, Porter EMS, Indiana State Police and Porter County Animal Control.
